6 Highlight Palettes you should Invest in
Even though highlighters are not a new “thing”, highlighters are only starting to be a big trend in make-up in the past year and a half! I mean, everyone is coming out with highlighters and that makes it difficult for anyone to choose a brand let alone a shade! Being a make-up junkie, its hard for me to select highlighters to buy without breaking my wallet. Hence, I make sure I'm getting my money's worth by doing my research, making sure the colours suit my complexion as well as the make-up looks that I usually go for, checking the formula and definitely the price. That being said, I have been really happy with the highlighters that I purchased and decided to share some of my favourites!
If you’re the type of person that likes to try popular make-up trends but want a palette where you can explore different colours without spending your money on multiple single products, I have the best recommendations for you that caters to different budgets!
1. Becca x Jaclyn Hill: Champagne Collection Face Palette ($52 USD via Sephora)
This just released on May 26th online and was sold out in the same day. But fear not! Jaclyn Hill has announced that this Champagne Collection Face Palette will be back in stock June 16th , both in stores and online. It’s not a permanent product, so grab one while you can!
I would recommend this palette if you’re in the mood for splurging because even though it is the priciest palette in this post, you’re really getting your money’s worth. The palette includes 3 blushes (Rosé Spritz, Amaretto and Pamplemousse) and 2 highlighters (Champagne Pop and Prosecco Pop). The great thing about the 3 blushes are that they’re actually in different finishes (Shimmery, Matte and Satin), making it really easy for you to switch it up and have a variation of blush colours that will fit different looks. There are so many combinations that you can create with this palette and with all the colours being so pigmented, this will last you for a really long time. The 2 highlights are the spotlight of the palette! They look amazing, feel amazing and lasts all day. You can use the colours separately or together, and the pigmentation is crazy! You’ll literally be glowing all day, all day.Get it here!
2. Tarte: Rainforest of the Sea Skin Twinkle Lighting Palette ($42 USD via Sephora)
This palette is more light gold and gold based, creating natural looks but also allows you to build up your highlight. This palette is small and compact but the actual pan is big as it only includes 3 colours. My favorite way to use this palette is to directly put the 2 powder finish shades on the areas that you want to highlight. Another way that I love using this palette is to first put the middle shade (which is a creamier soft gold almost off white shade) onto my cheek bones, then for an extra glow (especially for a night out), I like to put one of the powder shades on top of the cream to achieve that glow that you can see miles away! This Rainforest of the Sea Skin Twinkle Lighting Palette is perfect for people like a natural glow that still twinkles because the sparkles in these shades are not as big as the ones in the Becca highlighters, giving you a neutral glowy look!Get it here!
3 & 4. Anastasia Beverly Hills: Glow Kit in Gleam and That Glow ($40 USD via Sephora)
The Glow Kit comes in 3 palette shades, the newest shade in Sun Dipped just came out today so for now I will be talking about the kits in That Glow and Gleam. All the Glow kits include 4 big pan sized colours that allows you to get a good amount of each colour. That Glow is gold and bronzed based, perfect for Spring and Summer; and Gleam is pearlized and pink based, perfect for Fall and Winter. I personally find myself using the Gleam kit more just because I really like the pink based pearlized and iridescent finishes. I find that all 4 of the Gleam shades (Hard Candy, Starburst, Crushed Pearl and Mimosa) are not too pink, and it just gives you such a cool glow.
I use That Glow (comes in Sunburst, Bubbly, Dripping in Gold and Golden Bronze) when I go out during the day. I love using Golden Bronze as my bronzer, then using Dripping in Gold as my highlight. The pigmentation is perfect for all the Glow Kits, but you must swipe with your brush when you’re trying to get the product on. If you dab it, not as much product goes on your brush. If you want a “Va-Va-Voom!” glow, spray your highlight brush with any setting spray then apply the highlight. These Glow Kits are great if you want to splurge and want a good variation of highlight colours. Even though you have to be specific on how you swipe the colour onto your brush, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kits are definitely my favorite so I’m very excited for the Sun Dipped palette to arrive at my doorstep!Get it here!
5. NYX: Strobe of Genius Illuminating Palette ($18.99 USD via Ulta)
The Strobe of Genius Illuminating Palette is perfect for you if you’re on a budget but love trying a different range of highlight colours. There are a total of 7 colours in this palette, including 3 rose gold toned highlights, 2 gold tones, 1 purple and 1 yellow toned highlight. The colours are great because there are natural colours as well funky, cool colours. I used the purple one a few times and actually really loved it, especially if I mix it with one of the gold toned highlight colours. I would say that you would need more than 1 swipe to get the pigment and colour on your cheekbones, but all of these colours (yes, even the yellow toned shade) looks really good, especially if you spray your brush with some setting spray beforehand. I personally prefer smaller sparkles on highlights so this would not be an absolute favourite for me but overall, it’s a good choice for an affordable highlight palette!Get it here!
6. Elf Cosmetics: Illuminating Palette ($6 USD via the Elf Cosmetics website)
Everyone knows that Elf Cosmetics makes the most affordable and good quality make-up. Because it’s super hard to find Elf products anywhere in Toronto, I went on a road trip with my best friend a few weeks ago to Buffalo to hunt down some of these products. I came across this Illuminating Palette from Elf and instantly fell in love with it. Not only was it less than 10 dollars, the quality did not disappoint. You need this palette in your life if you want highlight colours that you can use for everyday wear and for work. There are 2 shades on the left of the palette that are very subtle and beige-gold based. The other 2 shades on the right are a bit more shimmery, great for a stronger but still subtle glow. All of these shades are perfect as base colours as well, you can then add a stronger highlight on top! Less than 10 dollars with 4 amazing shades and amazing pigmentation- you cannot go wrong with this Elf palette!Get it here!
