#TravelTuesdays: The Cosmopolitan Capital of Catalunya (Part 1)
Hello & welcome to another installment of #traveltuesdays. Today we look back on a short trip that was taken over the summer break in Barcelona. Barcelona is one of the most lively and colorful cities of Europe. Every street corner is full of amazing architecture and boredom will never be an issue when visiting this city.
There is so much to take in in Barcelona that I have decided to break it down into 2 categories and post respectively: how to get around & what to see and do in the city.
How to get around the city
Barcelona Travel Card: This multi-day travel card is available for 2-5 days. The prices range between 14€ (Hola BCN 2 days) to 32€ (Hola BCN 5 days). With this card you have unlimited journeys on the entire Barcelona public transport system.
Bicycles: This is probably the cheapest, easiest and most popular way to get around especially in the summer. The catch however is you are solely responsible for the bicycle (bikes get stolen a lot in the city vicinity). You need to leave behind an ID or a cash deposit. Daily rental fees range from 6€ for 1 day, 10€ for 1 day and night and 45€ for a week.
While I started with a con, the pros of the bicycle is that is perfect for getting around the narrow crowded alleyways of the Gothic Quarter (more in part 2) and for simply cruising along the sunny boulevards near the beach. It is a quicker and fun way of getting to know the city.
Helpful hint: there are designated bike paths, please stick to these or else you will end up having a nasty fall!
The public transport system is amazing in Barcelona, you can go from the airport straight into the city using the Metro/ train. However within the city, the metro stops running at midnight (Monday- Thursday) and at 2 am on the weekends. Fear not though, taxi rates are standard and will not burn a hole in your wallet.
The approximate rate is € 1.10/km (from 8am – 8pm) and €1.30 (from 8pm-8am). There is a minimum fee of €7 when you get into the cab.
Now that you know how to get about this amazing city, stay tuned for part two where I will highlight the top things to see and do.
